I waited 5 hours to find out what was happening, as I live in another city. I lost total engine power, and I had to call the towing truck to take me to the closest dealership, as the car is still under warranty. I was barely able to pull over to the shoulder, and drive off the upcoming exit ramp. Then the epc & check engine lights turned on, on the dashboard. While traveling on the freeway in san diego, my car started shaking and losing power. Vw should have issued a bulletin for servicing this known issue and we would not have been forced to buy a new vehicle, moreover, they should have issued a recall as this could be fatal if it went out while driving. It had 150k miles, but we should have been able to drive this car for many more miles.
We took great care of this car including servicing as recommended. The dealership must dismantle the engine to determine root cause and price for proper repairs, which they are estimating as $2,000 to $5,000 - which is more than the car is worth.
Thankful that this did not happen while driving as it would have been very dangerous. They determined the timing chain slipped. They performed diagnostics and then went to pull the vehicle out of shop and it would not start. I took it in to the vw dealership to look at it for the second time. When turning corners, check engine light would flash on and engine would sometimes misfire.
